Ardchattan Parish Archive is celebrating the award of £9,900 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, just announced.

Along with Ulva School Community Association, also in Argyll, Ardchattan Parish Archive is one of the first groups in the UK to receive funding from this new Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF)  scheme – the ‘All Our Stories‘ grant.

This exciting project, Dualchas agus Duthacas : a sense of place, in Ardchattan in North Argyll  and led by Ardchattan Parish Archive, has been given £9,900 to empower and inspire the community, across the generations, to capture fading memories, understand their surroundings better, and begin to build the foundations of a lasting publicly accessible archive.

All Our Stories, a brand new small grant programme, launched earlier this year in support of BBC Two’s The Great British Story, presented by popular historian Michael Wood – has been designed as an opportunity for everyone to get involved in their heritage. With HLF funding and support, community groups will carry out activities that help people explore, share and celebrate their local heritage.

This programme and the All Our Stories funding initiative have proved a cultural touchstone and now Ardchattan’s Dualchas agus Duthchas : a sense of place is one of hundreds of successful projects around the UK to receive a grant.

Ardchattan Parish Archive is a new organisation, set up by local people to promote interest in the local history, culture and environment of the parish.  Through their initial project, Dualchas agus Duthcas, they will be organising walks, talks and workshops for everyone to join in, cataloguing community held material to begin to create a parish archive, accessible to all and hold a exhibition in the summer to showcase their work. Social media and websites will be used to share the projects findings along the way.

Michael Wood is looking forward to all the ‘… fascinating and moving stories which are certain to be uncovered, bringing to life the excitement of local history and linking every community stories with the national narrative.’

Commenting on the award, an Archive spokesman says: ‘We are thrilled to have been awarded this grant and we can’t wait to get started.

‘We love where we live and know there’s so much more to discover about our past, from the Big Bang to the Present Day.

‘We are all really excited about mastering new skills, learning more from our community and sharing the stories of our heritage with locals, descendants, and visitors to the parish.’

As Colin McLean, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund Scotland, says: ‘We are indeed a nation of story tellers and we want to explore and dig deeper into our past and discover more about what really matters to us. Dualchas agus Duthcas is embarking on a real journey of discovery.’
